Important Changes to Student & Graduate Immigration Rules Announced

by source

Date: 14 October 2025

A new Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules was published today, introducing key revisions that will affect international students and graduates applying under the UK’s immigration routes.

What’s Changing for Student Applications (From 11 November 2025)

Students applying under the student route on or after 11 November 2025 will face higher maintenance (financial) requirements.

The new required minimum funds will be:
• £1,529 per month if studying in London (for up to 9 months)
• £1,171 per month if studying outside London (for up to 9 months)

In addition, the maximum amount that may be offset against accommodation costs will also rise, aligning with the new maintenance thresholds (i.e. £1,529 per month)

These changes mean that prospective students will need to show a significantly larger sum in their financial evidence when making applications from 11 November 2025 onward.

Changes to the Graduate Route (From 1 January 2027)

Currently, graduates (those completing eligible UK bachelor’s or master’s programmed) who apply for the Graduate route are granted 2 years of permission.

From 1 January 2027, that period will be reduced to 18 months for those applying on or after that date.

This change does not affect:
• Applications filed before 1 January 2027
• Graduates who complete a PhD or other doctoral degree, who will continue to receive 3 years’ permission

What You Should Do Now

If you’re planning to apply under the student route after 11 November 2025, begin preparing to show the increased financial funds.

If you anticipate applying under the Graduate route, aim to submit before 1 January 2027 to benefit from the current 2-year allowance (if eligible).

For those pursuing or completing a PhD, the new Graduate route rules will not impact your entitlements.
