UK Clarifies Four Categories of People Who Can Sponsor Adult Dependent Relatives

by source

London, UK | 2 October 2026*

The UK has set out the categories of people who may sponsor an *Adult Dependent Relative (ADR)* to join them in Britain, under the current Immigration Rules.

According to a report published by *Legit.ng on 30 September 2026*, the UK Government’s Adult Dependent Relative rules identify four categories of sponsors who may be eligible to bring a qualifying dependent relative to the UK.

The four sponsor categories are:

*1. British Citizens*
A British citizen may sponsor an eligible adult dependent relative under the ADR route.

*2. People Settled in the UK*
A person who has settled status or another qualifying form of permanent immigration status in the UK may also act as a sponsor.

*3. People with Protection Status*
Individuals who hold qualifying protection status in the UK are included within the sponsor categories.

*4. Specified EEA Nationals*
Certain EEA nationals with permission under *Appendix EU* may also qualify as sponsors.

### Who can apply as an Adult Dependent Relative?

The sponsor category is only one part of the eligibility requirements. Under Appendix Adult Dependent Relative, the applicant must generally be the sponsor’s:

* Parent
* Grandparent
* Son or daughter
* Brother or sister

The applicant must be aged 18 or over and must require *long-term personal care to perform everyday tasks because of age, illness or disability*. For an entry-clearance application, the required level of care must not be available or affordable in the country where the applicant is living, even with financial assistance from the sponsor.

### Financial responsibility remains with the sponsor

The rules also place significant financial responsibilities on the sponsor. The sponsor must demonstrate that they can provide adequate *maintenance, accommodation and care* for the applicant without relying on public funds.

A sponsor must also provide evidence of sufficient income or savings and sign a maintenance undertaking covering the required period.

### Entry clearance must normally be obtained before travelling

For applicants seeking to come to the UK from overseas, entry clearance as an Adult Dependent Relative must be obtained *before travelling to Britain*. The route is therefore subject to detailed eligibility and documentary requirements before arrival.

Where the sponsor is a British citizen or settled in the UK, an eligible Adult Dependent Relative may be granted settlement under the route. Where the sponsor has temporary permission to stay, the dependent relative may instead receive temporary permission linked to the sponsor’s immigration status.

### Important clarification for families

Being the parent, grandparent, child or sibling of a British citizen or settled person *does not by itself guarantee eligibility*. The applicant must satisfy the dependency, care, financial and other requirements contained in the Immigration Rules.

The UK Government also has a separate provision for Adult Dependent Relatives of *British National (Overseas) status holders* under Appendix Hong Kong British National (Overseas).

For families considering this route, the distinction between the *eligible sponsor, the **qualifying family relationship, and the **strict dependency and care requirements* is particularly important.
