HMRC Opens Registration for UK–India Free Trade Agreement Origin Declarations

by source

UK businesses preparing to export goods to India under the UK–India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) can now register with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to issue origin declarations.

This registration enables eligible UK producers and exporters to self-certify that their goods comply with the FTA’s rules of origin, eliminating the need to obtain a separate certificate of origin for each shipment. As a result, businesses can benefit from preferential tariff rates on qualifying exports to India, making trade faster, simpler, and more cost-effective.

Who needs to register?

Registration is required for businesses that:

  • Export UK-origin goods to India.
  • Intend to issue origin declarations under the UK–India Free Trade Agreement.

What you’ll need to register:

  • An Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) number.
  • Your business details.
  • The email addresses that will be used to submit origin declarations.

The UK–India Free Trade Agreement, which comes into force on 15 July 2026, marks a significant milestone in strengthening trade between the two countries. The agreement is designed to reduce tariffs, streamline customs procedures, and unlock new commercial opportunities across a wide range of industries.

Businesses intending to export under the agreement are encouraged to complete their HMRC registration as early as possible, ensuring they are ready to take advantage of the preferential tariff benefits from the very first day the agreement takes effect.
