New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) is proposing to exempt a clause requiring doctors with postgraduate (PG) degrees from countries like the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to complete a one-year senior residency before joining the medical colleges in India as teachers.
This exemption applies specifically to those who have earned their PG degree from any of these foreign countries after completing their undergraduate medical degree in India. The draft legislation includes another provision that doctors with four years of service in government hospitals in India can become eligible for the post of Assistant Professor in medical colleges. To qualify, they must hold a PG degree and should have worked as a consultant or specialist in a government hospital with at least 220 beds. They should also have successfully completed the Basic Course in Biomedical Research. For career advancement, doctors must also acquire additional qualifications.
For direct eligibility as an Associate Professor, a minimum of 10 years of clinical experience in government hospitals is required. Doctors appointed as Senior Residents before 2017, who have continuously served in that position and hold a diploma qualification, are eligible for the post of Assistant Professor.
