The UK government has clarified the length of time eligible migrants must live in the country before applying for British citizenship, as part of its ongoing immigration reforms.
Under the current citizenship rules, most migrants are required to complete at least five years of lawful residence in the UK before becoming eligible to apply for naturalisation. Applicants generally must also hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) for 12 months before submitting a citizenship application, unless they are married to a British citizen, in which case different rules may apply.
Alongside the existing requirements, the government is consulting on wider immigration reforms that could extend the standard route to settlement for many migrants from five years to ten years. Officials say the proposed changes are designed to reward long-term contribution and strengthen the pathway to permanent residence and citizenship. The proposals have not yet been fully implemented and remain subject to consultation and final policy decisions.
The Home Office is expected to release further details on how the proposed reforms will affect existing visa holders, including any transitional arrangements for migrants already living and working in the UK.
