Over 2 Lakh Indians Gave Up Citizenship in 2024: Indian Government

New Delhi: More than 2.06 lakh Indians renounced their citizenship in 2024, the government informed the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, in a written reply, said 2,06,378 people gave up their Indian citizenship last year to acquire citizenship of other countries.

Data shared by the Ministry of External Affairs shows a rising trend over the past few years, though 2024 saw a slight dip compared to 2022 and 2023. The figures were 85,256 in 2020, 1,63,370 in 2021, 2,25,620 in 2022, and 2,16,219 in 2023.

For historical context, 1,22,819 people gave up Indian citizenship in 2011, followed by 1,20,923 in 2012, 1,31,405 in 2013, and 1,29,328 in 2014.

The minister noted that the reasons for renunciation vary and are personal to each individual, with the government not maintaining specific data on the motivations behind these decisions.
