If you’re in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa, you might see the words “No Recourse to Public Funds” (NRPF) on your visa. This means you are not allowed to claim certain UK government benefits while you’re living here on a temporary visa.
This guide will help you understand which benefits you can and cannot get — and how to stay within the rules.
❌ Which Benefits Are Not Allowed (Public Funds)
If your visa has the NRPF condition, you are not allowed to access the following government benefits:
1. Housing Benefit
Money to help you pay rent.
🔹 Example: Andre, who works as a medical lab assistant, cannot apply for Housing Benefit even though rent is high in Manchester.
2. Carer’s Allowance
For people who care for someone at least 35 hours a week.
🔹 Example: Farah, who looks after her disabled sister full-time, is not allowed to claim Carer’s Allowance due to her visa restrictions.
3. Universal Credit
A monthly payment for people on low income or out of work.
🔹 Example: Liam, a healthcare assistant whose work hours were cut, isn’t eligible for Universal Credit.
4. Income Support / Income-Based JSA or ESA
Help for people with little or no income.
🔹 Example: Tanya, a care home worker on unpaid leave, cannot apply for Income Support.
5. Council Tax Reduction
A discount on council tax bills.
🔹 Example: Ibrahim, who works full-time on minimum wage, must pay full council tax.
6. Personal Independence Payment (PIP) / Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
Benefits for people with long-term illnesses or disabilities.
🔹 Example: Rosa, who has chronic back pain, is not allowed to claim PIP.
7. State Pension Credit
Extra money for older people with low income.
🔹 Example: Navin, close to retirement, cannot apply for Pension Credit while on a Skilled Worker visa.
8. Help for Homelessness or Council Housing
Assistance from your local council if you are homeless or at risk.
🔹 Example: Elena, whose flat was damaged by flooding, is not eligible for council housing support.
