New Delhi, July 28 – A man who was educated in the United Kingdom has been arrested in India for allegedly running a bogus embassy out of a modest bungalow, authorities revealed on Monday.
According to Indian police, the suspect posed as a high-ranking diplomat and set up a fully functional imitation of a foreign embassy, complete with counterfeit documents, flags, and fake diplomatic credentials. The operation was based in a residential neighborhood, raising suspicions among locals and eventually prompting an investigation.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, reportedly claimed to represent a non-existent country and even issued travel documents, visas, and official appointments. Investigators believe that he used his British education to appear more credible, targeting individuals seeking foreign visas or diplomatic assistance.
Police sources said the accused had been operating the fake diplomatic mission for several months before being exposed. Dozens of fake seals, stamps, and certificates were recovered during a raid on the property, along with several forged documents that were allegedly issued in the name of various government departments.
Authorities are now examining whether any international fraud or human trafficking activities were linked to the sham embassy. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs have confirmed they are cooperating with local law enforcement in the investigation.
“This is a serious breach of public trust,” said a senior police official. “People were misled into believing they were dealing with legitimate representatives of a foreign government.”
The suspect has been charged with forgery, impersonation, and conspiracy, and remains in police custody while the investigation continues. Further arrests may follow as authorities try to determine the full scale of the operation.
