Ludhiana, February 7 – A 21-year-old woman from Punjab’s Jagraon, Ludhiana, who was deported from the United States, has urged the government to help her return to the United Kingdom to continue her studies. Muskan, a student at CU College, London, was among 104 people deported by the US in a military aircraft.
Muskan had legally traveled to the UK on a student visa in January 2023 to pursue a three-year business management course. However, she and a group of friends were detained at the Tijuana border in Mexico. Speaking to The Indian Express, Muskan insisted that they never intended to enter the US illegally.
“We had legally traveled to Mexico for a trip and were stopped at the Tijuana border. The authorities took us to a detention center, where we spent 10 days. They did not tell us anything or ask us any questions. We were never informed that we were being deported to India. I still have a valid UK study visa, so why was I sent back here?” she questioned.
Family Struggles with Huge Debt
Muskan’s deportation has left her family in distress, as they had taken a loan of ₹15 lakh to fund her education. Her father, who runs a small eatery in Jagraon, expressed shock upon learning of her deportation. “We were unaware of what was happening. She called us from Amritsar airport, and that’s when we found out she had been sent back to India,” he said.
Now, Muskan fears she may not be allowed to return to the UK, which could jeopardize her education and future. “My two-year course is still pending. If I don’t go back, my career will be ruined. I appeal to the government to help me return,” she said.
Political Support for Muskan’s Plea
Jagraon MLA Sarvjit Kaur Manuke has appealed to the government to intervene and help Muskan return to London. “The family is in debt, and her education is crucial for her future. She should be allowed to complete her studies so she can support her family,” Manuke stated.
As Muskan and her family await a response from the authorities, their hopes now rest on the government’s decision, which could determine her academic and professional future.
