Why millions of Europe’s migrants could soon flock to Britain

Ursula von der Leyen has suggested that the EU could set up return hubs outside the EU

Goodbye Rwanda, hello Albania. That could be the message from Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president. In a letter to member states she suggested that the EU could set up return hubs outside the EU, to deport failed asylum seekers.

She says the EU can “draw lessons” from Italy’s plan to send asylum seekers to Albania for processing. After years of being on the frontline of Europe’s migrant crisis, on October 14 an Italian naval vessel left Lampedusa for Shen Gijn, a port in Albania, with a cargo of 16 asylum seekers. Ten were from Bangladesh and six from Egypt, all rescued by Italian naval ships near the Libyan coast. The vessel should dock today.
