FRENCH president Emmanuel Macron has called for European Union countries which refuse to take in migrants to face financial penalties. The president said any EU nation which turned away migrants with proven asylum status should suffer the sanctions.

He was speaking ahead of a hastilyconvened summit on immigration in Brussels today between EU leaders.

“You can’t have countries that massively benefit from the solidarity of the European Union and that massively voice their national selfishness when it comes to migrant issues,” said Mr Macron in an apparent response to Italy’s decision to close its ports to boats packed with rescued migrants.

Mr Macron made the comments after his first meeting with Spain’s new prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, at the Elysee Palace.

Both leaders agreed extra detention centres should be opened in Europe to review asylum seekers’ applications.

Those whose applications failed would be sent home.

This would come on top of so-called “disembarkation platforms” outside the EU where asylum requests could be assessed before claimants reach Europe.

EU leaders are trying to stem the flow of migrants coming by boat from north Africa.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be discussing the issue with fellow European leaders in an attempt to hammer out an EU immigration policy.

Her future as Germany’s leader is at stake – unless she can come up with a convincing policy her fragile coalition is likely to break apart, triggering elections.

German interior minister Horst Seehofer has called for migrants who have arrived elsewhere in Europe to be refused entry to Germany.

Mrs Merkel opposes the plan.

Andrea Nahles, leader of the centre-left Social Democrats, warned in a speech yesterday: “Horst Seehofer is a danger to Europe. Horst Seehofer [and his allies] are on the way to a German Brexit.”

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said a draft EU accord on migration has been withdrawn after he clashed with the German Chancellor.

Rock star Sting yesterday attacked world leaders for failing to solve the refugee crisis, branding them “half-men and cowards”.

Speaking at an Amnesty International event in Athens, the singer said “our socalled leaders, a sad parade of half-men, cowards, have not got the solutions”
