Human rights organisation Liberty has responded to the High Court ruling there must be a public inquiry into the appalling abuse that took place at Brook House Immigration Removal Centre.

Martha Spurrier, Liberty director, called on the Government to commit to a 28-day time limit on immigration as a first step towards building a more humane system.

Martha Spurrier, Liberty director, said:

“Today the High Court confirmed what we already knew – immigration detention is inhumane and degrading and life in detention centres too often abusive. It is welcome that a public inquiry will now take place but that’s not enough. To even begin to put an end to this inhumanity the Government must implement a 28 day time limit on detention.”
