Ontario is all set to launch the Regional Immigration Pilot in 2020.
The following three communities have been selected to participate in the pilot program:
- Belleville/ Quinte West
The two-year pilot program is the newest addition to the OINP.
The Ontario Govt. has said that the new pilot will be designed to extend the benefits of economic immigration to rural communities in the province. The new pilot will focus on addressing labour shortage in the rural and smaller communities of the province.
The Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade has said that the new pilot will help businesses in the three communities address skill gaps. The pilot will help support the economic growth of the province. It will also pave a pathway for foreign workers to transition to becoming Permanent Residents of Canada.
A significant portion of all immigrants in the province settle in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario. Only about 20% settle elsewhere.
The Ministry also said that the communities were selected on the basis of their specific workforce challenges. The Ministry also looked into the ability of these communities to help newcomers settle in the province and the interest of the community stakeholders.
The outcome of this pilot program will help the Ontario Govt. take measures to regionalize economic immigration further.
The OINP will set aside at least 150 visa places through the new Regional Immigration Pilot Program. Eligible applicants would be able to apply for a Canadian Permanent Residence through the Employer Job Offer Category of the OINP. This category allows eligible applicants with a job offer in Ontario to apply for a provincial nomination for Canadian PR.
Ontario also plans to add new occupations, especially from the Manufacturing sector, in the new In-demand Skills Stream list under the Employer Job Offer Category in 2020.
