Mid Wales AM Kirsty Williams has welcomed the publication of a Welsh Government plan to improve the lives of people seeking sanctuary in Wales.
The ‘Nation of Sanctuary – Refugee and Asylum Seeker Plan’ was published on Tuesday, January 29. It follows a report in the National Assembly for Wales called ‘I used to be someone’.
The scheme aims to tackle inequalities and poverty experienced by refugees and asylum seekrs in Wales, promoting equality of opportunity and supporting them to access resources and mainstream services.
Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, said:
“An important test of our society is how we treat our most vulnerable. Whether we turn our back and walk away, or whether we show compassion and kindness, taking the opportunity to extend a hand of support to those who need it the most.
“I welcome the publication of ‘Nation of Sanctuary’ and support its aim of improving the lives of people seeking sanctuary in Wales.
“I also want to mention the local groups in Brecon and Radnorshire doing great work in this area, not least the Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees for which my office continues to be a collection point for donations.”
