KINDERTRANSPORT survivors have called for the government to commit to resettle 10,000 child refugees over the next decade from Europe and conflict regions.

A statement following the 80th anniversary of the rescue operation, signed by survivors including Lord Alf Dubs and Dame Stephanie Shirley, urged the government to provide more routes to sanctuary.

“As former child refugees ourselves, we believe the UK government should give more children at risk the same life-saving opportunity that we had,” the Our Turn campaign statement read.

“They continue to live in unsanitary and unsafe camps or on the streets because the alternative is war, conflict and persecution. They have no other choice. But we do have a choice.”

Britain has resettled only 20 unaccompanied children from conflict zones in the past two years, Safe Passage found.

The 60 signatories to the statement were honoured at a commemoration event yesterday at the Quakers’ Friends House in London.
